Welcome Back Ophiuchus!
New Zodiac Signs
For your whole life you’ve read your horoscope, daily you’ve made important life
changing decision on what the your Zodiac sign has dictated for that day. Maybe,
you even blamed luck, loss, love, success and failure based on in which astrological
season you were born. Now thanks to a few astronomers all that might have
changed.
An astronomy professor at a Minnesota college released that since the Earth has
rotated since the original calendar was formed your Zodiac sign might be incorrect.
The original Zodiac calendar had 13 signs rather than 12. The 13th sign, Ophiuchus
was dropped to make the calendar flow. Ophiuchus is Greek for serpent bearer
and is represented by a man holding a snake as he splits the constellation Serpers
into two smaller constellations. The professor has called Ophiuchus the forgotten
stepchild of the Zodiac.
Not so fast say some astronomers- this old yet new again addition to the calendar
only affects those follow the “Tropical Zodiac”, which is the Zodiac used by the
western world. Ophiuchus is used by followers of the “Sidereal Zodiac” which is
focused on the backdrop of the stars rather than on the sun’s rays and the Earth’s
two tropics.
The story behind Ophiuchus is as confusing as the debate surrounding his use
today. A few major stories are typically used to describe the serpent handler. The
first one claims that Ophiuchus represents the tragic Greek Hero who learned
the secret of keeping Death at bay, which would have led mankind to becoming
immortal. Angered by this Zeus struck him down with a lightening bolt. Others
say he represents the Trojan Priest, Lacoon who after warning his fellow Trojans
against accepting the wooden Trojan Horse was killed by a pair of serpents sent by
the Gods. Still others claim Ophiuchus is a representation of Apollo who wrestled a
giant python to take control of toe Oracle of Delphi.
So who would be considered a snake handler? Those born between November 29-
December 17 would now fall under Ophiuchus’ guidance. Several big stars like
Taylor Swift, Ian Somerhalder, Britney Spears, and Jeff Bridges all would fall under
the new sign. To make room for his Zodiac homecoming other signs have had to
shift, which has changed a lot the signs that many people fall under. Check out the
chart below to see if your Zodiac sign has changed. But remember that the changes
only apply to those born after 2009.
