Ultra Simple Diet ReviewThis diet was created by Mark Hyman, M.D., author of the book The Ultra Simple Diet: Kick Start Your Diet and Safely Lose Up to 10 Pounds in 7 Days. The key to the Ultra Simple Diet is, well, simple. According to Dr. Hyman, once we expose our body to a simple way of supporting our health, we kick-start our metabolism and it goes into high gear.

The Ultra Simple Diet works by giving the body foods and activities that will help cleanse the body and reduce inflammation. Once the body has been cleansed it will do the rest of the work automatically. According to Dr. Hyman,

“Our bodies have the natural ability to find balance and heal itself once we stop doing the things that harm it and give it what it needs to become balanced again.”

A 7-day weight loss plan is provided in the book which is designed to help one:

* Lose weight
* Increase Energy
* Revitalize the body.

The diet provides detailed instructions on what to eat and what NOT to eat, as well as recipes, supplements and techniques for reducing stress.

Here’s what you will do:

* Eliminate unhealthy foods from your diet (sugar, trans fats, refined carbs., foods that are processed, caffeine and alcohol).
* Add healthy foods (unprocessed, whole foods such as vegetables, beans, brown rice, fish, chicken and fruit).
* Eliminate impurities from the body.
* Eliminate foods that can cause inflammation.
* Learn to relax & reflect.

What to Expect with the Ultra Simple Diet

After just one week on the diet you may experience weight loss of up to 10 pounds, better digestion, better quality of sleep (which increases energy levels), decreased joint pain, decreased retention of fluids, and decreased congestion and allergies. Of course, one week is generally not enough time for most people to reach their weight loss goals, but by continuing the program past the 7 day mark, one should experience continued weight loss results. After three (3) months of being on the Ultra Simple Diet, should you be at your desired weight, you are allowed to occasionally add to your diet some of the foods previously eliminated without much of an adverse affect. Remember: only eat them in moderation.

There is a Basic Ultra Simple Diet Program (outlined above) as well as an Enhanced Ultra Simple Diet Program. Both programs recommend avoiding foods causing potential food allergies and drinking “UltraShakes” and “UltraBroths”. Recipes for both of these are provided in the book. The Enhanced Program is identical to the Basic Program except the Advanced Program adds natural supplements, additional detoxification, omega 3 fats, and walking.

Dr. Hyman states there are a multitude of other conditions which MAY also improve with this diet, including:

* allergies
* diabetes
* irritable bowel (IBS)
* diseases of the autoimmune system
* menstrual problems
* headaches
* fibromyalgia.

Sample Menu for the Ultra Simple Diet:

Breakfast:
Lemon juice (from ½ lemon) and hot water
1 cup decaf or caffeinated green tea steeped in hot water for 5 minutes (May have green tea later in the day, but limit intake to 2 cups a day.)
UltraShake.

Morning Snack:
1 cup UltraBroth
Another UltraShake (if you are hungry)
If no bowel movement by 10 a.m., take herbal laxative (2–3 capsules).

Lunch:
2 cups or more of steamed or lightly sauteed veggies (enough to feel gently satisfied).
½ cup cooked brown rice
½ cup fruit or berries for dessert (either here or at dinner, not both, and only 1–2 times during the 7-day program.)
UltraShake (optional)

Afternoon Snack:
1 cup UltraBroth or UltraShake (if you are hungry)

Dinner:
4–6 ounces of fish or chicken breasts cooked with olive oil and lemon juice OR 4 to 6 ounces of tofu or legumes. (spice up meals with rosemary, cilantro, ginger, garlic, turmeric, or curry, and sea salt).
2 cups or more of steamed or lightly sauteed veggies (eat enough to feel gently satisfied).
½ cup cooked brown rice 1 cup.
UltraBroth

Pros of the Ultra Simple Diet:

* You will not feel hungry
* Very healthy and balanced food plan
* Weight loss benefit, as well as a multitude of other positive health benefits
* Can be repeated up to three months and/or until you reach a desired weight

Cons of the Ultra Simple Diet:

* No caffeine or alcohol allowed
* Strict dietary restrictions
* No available support network
* Must make UltraBroth and UltraShakes which can be inconvenient at times
* May experience monotony with the foods recommended
